Credits and licences
The language data Tinta shows comes partly from the open sources below, each under its own licence. The glosses are this project's own work. The application also includes the open-source software listed after them.
Language data
NOTICE
======
This application bundles word-frequency, lemmatisation and pronunciation data
derived from third-party sources. Those data files carry share-alike licences;
the application code does not.
These upstream sources do not all use the same licence and two of them are
mutually incompatible, so their derivatives are kept in separate files.
Each data file below carries the licence of the source or sources it derives
from, and files under incompatible licences are never merged.
The data ships as language packs — plain text files under app/public/packs/,
one directory per language, fetched by the application at runtime rather than
compiled into it. Each pack's pack.json names its files and states the licence
of each, and each file repeats its attribution in a `#` header so that the
licence travels with the file if it is redistributed on its own.
1. Frequency and band data — CC BY-SA 4.0
-----------------------------------------
Files: app/public/packs/*/ranks.txt
Derived from:
hermitdave/FrequencyWords — https://github.com/hermitdave/FrequencyWords
Word frequency lists compiled from OpenSubtitles subtitle corpora.
Licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International
(CC BY-SA 4.0) — https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/
Underlying corpus: OpenSubtitles — https://www.opensubtitles.org/
The English pack's ranks draw on one further measurement of the same underlying
corpus, in app/tools/dictgen/corrections/en.contractions.txt:
OPUS OpenSubtitles v2018 — https://opus.nlpl.eu/OpenSubtitles-v2018.php
P. Lison and J. Tiedemann (2016), "OpenSubtitles2016: Extracting Large
Parallel Corpora from Movie and TV Subtitles", LREC 2016.
hermitdave's tokeniser splits on the apostrophe, so its lists have no row for
`it's` or `I'm` — only for `it`, `I` and `'s`. Contraction counts were therefore
measured directly from OPUS's raw text and are used to divide each clitic's
existing count among the words that make it up. What is stored is the counts, a
measurement of a freely redistributable corpus, and they are combined with a
CC BY-SA source; the resulting file stays CC BY-SA 4.0 with both credited.
The Arabic pack's ranks also derive from the source in section 3a, which
decided which spellings count towards which word; both are CC BY-SA 4.0, so
the two are compatible and may share a file, and its header credits both.
These files are themselves licensed CC BY-SA 4.0.
The frequency band shown for a word is a bucketed corpus rank, and so is
derived from this source — but it is computed from ranks.txt when a pack is
loaded rather than stored in dict.txt. That keeps this licence inside the file
it belongs to instead of reaching across the glosses, which are not derived
from it. Where dict.txt still states a band, the word has no corpus rank and
the band is a judgement rather than a derivative.
This applies to every pack, the Indonesian one (app/public/packs/id/) included.
Its bands were derived from this same source before this NOTICE existed and were
previously unattributed; this file corrects that. It reached the repository by a
different route from the rest — written by hand, not generated — but tools/dictgen
now emits it too, from its own files rather than from a re-fetched list.
2. Lemmatisation data — ODbL 1.0
--------------------------------
Files: app/public/packs/*/lemmas.txt, except the Arabic pack's (section 3a)
Derived from:
michmech/lemmatization-lists —
https://github.com/michmech/lemmatization-lists
Lemma/token pairs collected from Hunspell dictionaries and related sources.
Licensed under the Open Database License (ODbL) v1.0 —
https://opendatacommons.org/licenses/odbl/1-0/
These files are themselves licensed ODbL 1.0.
3a. Lemmatisation data, Arabic — CC BY-SA 4.0
---------------------------------------------
Files: app/public/packs/ar/lemmas.txt
Derived from:
English Wiktionary — https://en.wiktionary.org/
via the kaikki.org machine-readable extract —
https://kaikki.org/dictionary/Arabic/
T. Ylonen (2022), "Wiktextract: Wiktionary as Machine-Readable Structured
Data", LREC 2022.
Licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International
(CC BY-SA 4.0) — https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/
and from the source in section 1, for which forms the corpus uses.
This file is itself licensed CC BY-SA 4.0. Only Wiktionary's headwords and the
inflected forms in its tables are used, with its diacritics removed; none of
its definitions are. It is kept separate from ranks.txt, which carries its own
attribution, and never shares a file with the ODbL lemma lists of section 2 or
with the glosses of section 4.
The hand decisions in app/tools/dictgen/corrections/ar.lemmas.txt are this
project's own work.
Pronunciation data, Arabic — CC BY-SA 4.0
Files: app/public/packs/ar/readings.txt
Derived from the same Wiktionary extract, CC BY-SA 4.0: each headword written
with its short vowels, as Wiktionary's canonical form gives it, one per
headword, chosen by scoring against this project's own glosses. Its
definitions are used only for that choice and are not shipped. This file is
itself licensed CC BY-SA 4.0, and is kept apart from lemmas.txt, which carries
its own attribution, and from the glosses of section 4. The readings in
app/tools/dictgen/corrections/ar.readings.txt, for words Wiktionary has no
vowelled entry for, are this project's own work, and are shipped in the same
file under the same licence.
Word selection, Arabic — counted from the Tanzil Quran text, not shipped
Which words of the Quran the Arabic pack has an entry for was decided by
counting them in:
Tanzil Quran Text (Simple Clean, Version 1.1)
Copyright (C) 2007-2026 Tanzil Project — https://tanzil.net/
Licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0
The text is read at build time, verbatim and with its copyright block, only to
count how often each word occurs; no part of it is modified, stored in this
repository or shipped in any pack. The counts are recorded beside each word
in app/tools/dictgen/adopted/ar.tsv. The glosses those words received are
section 4's, generated from the word list alone.
3. Pronunciation and spelling data, Mandarin — CC BY-SA 4.0
-----------------------------------------------------------
Files: app/public/packs/zh/readings.txt
app/public/packs/zh/variants.txt
Derived from:
CC-CEDICT — https://cc-cedict.org/
A Chinese-English dictionary providing pinyin readings for Chinese words.
Licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International
(CC BY-SA 4.0) — https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/
Both files are themselves licensed CC BY-SA 4.0. Only the pinyin readings and
the traditional-spelling column are taken from CC-CEDICT; its English
definitions are not used, and the glosses in app/public/packs/zh/gloss.en.txt
are generated independently as described in section 5.
variants.txt states how each headword of the Mandarin pack is written in
traditional characters, so that a text in traditional characters can be read
against the same dictionary. Its content is the traditional column of
CC-CEDICT, selected per headword, and it is kept in a file of its own rather
than folded into the pack skeleton so that the share-alike licence does not
reach the unencumbered files beside it. Which spelling is chosen where
CC-CEDICT offers several is decided by scoring against this project's own
glosses; that selection is this project's work, but the spellings themselves
are not, so the whole file carries the upstream licence.
CC-CEDICT is also used at build time to map traditional spellings onto their
simplified equivalents, which affects which words appear in the Mandarin pack
and their frequency ranks. app/public/packs/zh/ranks.txt is therefore a derivative of
both this source and the source in section 1; both are CC BY-SA 4.0, so the two
are compatible and may share a file.
4. Glosses — not derived from any of the above sources
------------------------------------------------------
Files: app/public/packs/*/gloss.*.txt
app/public/packs/*/lex.txt
app/public/packs/*/phrases.txt
app/public/packs/*/phrases.*.txt
app/public/packs/*/letters.txt
app/public/packs/*/letters.*.txt
The glosses are generated at build time by a large language model, from the word
list alone. They are not copied or translated from any licensed dictionary or
corpus, and are not subject to the licences above. The phrase lists and their
glosses are written by hand for this project, from the same starting point.
lex.txt is listed here because it holds no meanings and no ranks: it is the
word list and its morphology, which is this project's own arrangement of its
own output.
letters.txt and letters.*.txt are the tables and notes behind letters mode —
each alphabet's letters, their names and romanisations, and what each sounds
like, written for each reader — and are written by hand for this project. The
Mandarin pack's letters.txt is the 214 Kangxi radicals (a list fixed in 1716),
written out by hand; which radical each character belongs to is not in it but
in radicals.txt, section 6.
5. Application code
-------------------
Everything outside app/public/packs/ is the application's own code and is not
affected by the licences above.
6. Character radicals, Mandarin — Unicode License v3
----------------------------------------------------
Files: app/public/packs/zh/radicals.txt
Derived from:
The Unicode Han Database (Unihan), the kRSUnicode field —
https://www.unicode.org/reports/tr38/
Licensed under the Unicode License v3 — https://www.unicode.org/license.txt
The file lists, for every character the Mandarin pack writes, the Kangxi
radical Unihan files it under, verbatim. It is kept apart from every other
file, and carries the licence's full notice in its own header so that the
notice travels with the data, as the licence asks. That notice reads:

7. Character parts, Mandarin — GNU LGPL 3.0 or later
----------------------------------------------------
Files: app/public/packs/zh/parts.txt
app/public/packs/zh/parts.<reader>.txt (es, fr, id, pt)
Derived from:
Make Me a Hanzi, dictionary.txt, by Shaunak Kishore and its contributors —
https://github.com/skishore/makemeahanzi (commit bddc96d4)
itself derived from Unihan and CJKlib.
Licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License, version 3 or (at
your option) any later version — https://www.gnu.org/licenses/lgpl-3.0.html
The file says, for every character of the Mandarin pack the source has and
for every part those characters name, what the character is built from (an
Ideographic Description Sequence), whether it is a picture, a compound of
meanings, or a meaning part plus a sound part, which part is which, the
source's short English note on it, and — only for a character the pack has
no headword of its own for — the source's English definition. The rows are
the source's fields, selected and not rewritten; the file's header says so,
with the date of the change, as the licence asks of a modified copy.
Each parts.<reader>.txt is a translation of two of those columns — the note
on how the parts make a character (only where it is not a meaning part plus a
sound part) and the definitions parts.txt keeps — into one reader's language.
A translation is a modification, so each is likewise its own file under LGPL
3.0 or later, with both licence texts and its own notice of change, dated, in
its header.
It is kept apart from every other file and is itself licensed LGPL 3.0 or
later. The full texts of the GNU LGPL and of the GNU GPL it supplements are in
the file's own header, so that they travel with the data. The file is plain
text and is its own source. The application reads it as data; nothing else in
the application is derived from it.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR USE, REPRODUCTION, AND DISTRIBUTION
1. Definitions.
"License" shall mean the terms and conditions for use, reproduction,
and distribution as defined by Sections 1 through 9 of this document.
"Licensor" shall mean the copyright owner or entity authorized by
the copyright owner that is granting the License.
"Legal Entity" shall mean the union of the acting entity and all
other entities that control, are controlled by, or are under common
control with that entity. For the purposes of this definition,
"control" means (i) the power, direct or indirect, to cause the
direction or management of such entity, whether by contract or
otherwise, or (ii) ownership of fifty percent (50%) or more of the
outstanding shares, or (iii) beneficial ownership of such entity.
"You" (or "Your") shall mean an individual or Legal Entity
exercising permissions granted by this License.
"Source" form shall mean the preferred form for making modifications,
including but not limited to software source code, documentation
source, and configuration files.
"Object" form shall mean any form resulting from mechanical
transformation or translation of a Source form, including but
not limited to compiled object code, generated documentation,
and conversions to other media types.
"Work" shall mean the work of authorship, whether in Source or
Object form, made available under the License, as indicated by a
copyright notice that is included in or attached to the work
(an example is provided in the Appendix below).
"Derivative Works" shall mean any work, whether in Source or Object
form, that is based on (or derived from) the Work and for which the
editorial revisions, annotations, elaborations, or other modifications
represent, as a whole, an original work of authorship. For the purposes
of this License, Derivative Works shall not include works that remain
separable from, or merely link (or bind by name) to the interfaces of,
the Work and Derivative Works thereof.
"Contribution" shall mean any work of authorship, including
the original version of the Work and any modifications or additions
to that Work or Derivative Works thereof, that is intentionally
submitted to Licensor for inclusion in the Work by the copyright owner
or by an individual or Legal Entity authorized to submit on behalf of
the copyright owner. For the purposes of this definition, "submitted"
means any form of electronic, verbal, or written communication sent
to the Licensor or its representatives, including but not limited to
communication on electronic mailing lists, source code control systems,
and issue tracking systems that are managed by, or on behalf of, the
Licensor for the purpose of discussing and improving the Work, but
excluding communication that is conspicuously marked or otherwise
designated in writing by the copyright owner as "Not a Contribution."
"Contributor" shall mean Licensor and any individual or Legal Entity
on behalf of whom a Contribution has been received by Licensor and
subsequently incorporated within the Work.
2. Grant of Copyright License. Subject to the terms and conditions of
this License, each Contributor hereby grants to You a perpetual,
worldwide, non-exclusive, no-charge, royalty-free, irrevocable
copyright license to reproduce, prepare Derivative Works of,
publicly display, publicly perform, sublicense, and distribute the
Work and such Derivative Works in Source or Object form.
3. Grant of Patent License. Subject to the terms and conditions of
this License, each Contributor hereby grants to You a perpetual,
worldwide, non-exclusive, no-charge, royalty-free, irrevocable
(except as stated in this section) patent license to make, have made,
use, offer to sell, sell, import, and otherwise transfer the Work,
where such license applies only to those patent claims licensable
by such Contributor that are necessarily infringed by their
Contribution(s) alone or by combination of their Contribution(s)
with the Work to which such Contribution(s) was submitted. If You
institute patent litigation against any entity (including a
cross-claim or counterclaim in a lawsuit) alleging that the Work
or a Contribution incorporated within the Work constitutes direct
or contributory patent infringement, then any patent licenses
granted to You under this License for that Work shall terminate
as of the date such litigation is filed.
4. Redistribution. You may reproduce and distribute copies of the
Work or Derivative Works thereof in any medium, with or without
modifications, and in Source or Object form, provided that You
meet the following conditions:
(a) You must give any other recipients of the Work or
Derivative Works a copy of this License; and
(b) You must cause any modified files to carry prominent notices
stating that You changed the files; and
(c) You must retain, in the Source form of any Derivative Works
that You distribute, all copyright, patent, trademark, and
attribution notices from the Source form of the Work,
excluding those notices that do not pertain to any part of
the Derivative Works; and
(d) If the Work includes a "NOTICE" text file as part of its
distribution, then any Derivative Works that You distribute must
include a readable copy of the attribution notices contained
within such NOTICE file, excluding those notices that do not
pertain to any part of the Derivative Works, in at least one
of the following places: within a NOTICE text file distributed
as part of the Derivative Works; within the Source form or
documentation, if provided along with the Derivative Works; or,
within a display generated by the Derivative Works, if and
wherever such third-party notices normally appear. The contents
of the NOTICE file are for informational purposes only and
do not modify the License. You may add Your own attribution
notices within Derivative Works that You distribute, alongside
or as an addendum to the NOTICE text from the Work, provided
that such additional attribution notices cannot be construed
as modifying the License.
You may add Your own copyright statement to Your modifications and
may provide additional or different license terms and conditions
for use, reproduction, or distribution of Your modifications, or
for any such Derivative Works as a whole, provided Your use,
reproduction, and distribution of the Work otherwise complies with
the conditions stated in this License.
5. Submission of Contributions. Unless You explicitly state otherwise,
any Contribution intentionally submitted for inclusion in the Work
by You to the Licensor shall be under the terms and conditions of
this License, without any additional terms or conditions.
Notwithstanding the above, nothing herein shall supersede or modify
the terms of any separate license agreement you may have executed
with Licensor regarding such Contributions.
6. Trademarks. This License does not grant permission to use the trade
names, trademarks, service marks, or product names of the Licensor,
except as required for reasonable and customary use in describing the
origin of the Work and reproducing the content of the NOTICE file.
7. Disclaimer of Warranty. Unless required by applicable law or
agreed to in writing, Licensor provides the Work (and each
Contributor provides its Contributions) on an "AS IS" BASIS,
WITHOUT WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS OF ANY KIND, either express or
implied, including, without limitation, any warranties or conditions
of TITLE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, MERCHANTABILITY, or FITNESS FOR A
PARTICULAR PURPOSE. You are solely responsible for determining the
appropriateness of using or redistributing the Work and assume any
risks associated with Your exercise of permissions under this License.
8. Limitation of Liability. In no event and under no legal theory,
whether in tort (including negligence), contract, or otherwise,
unless required by applicable law (such as deliberate and grossly
negligent acts) or agreed to in writing, shall any Contributor be
liable to You for damages, including any direct, indirect, special,
incidental, or consequential damages of any character arising as a
result of this License or out of the use or inability to use the
Work (including but not limited to damages for loss of goodwill,
work stoppage, computer failure or malfunction, or any and all
other commercial damages or losses), even if such Contributor
has been advised of the possibility of such damages.
9. Accepting Warranty or Additional Liability. While redistributing
the Work or Derivative Works thereof, You may choose to offer,
and charge a fee for, acceptance of support, warranty, indemnity,
or other liability obligations and/or rights consistent with this
License. However, in accepting such obligations, You may act only
on Your own behalf and on Your sole responsibility, not on behalf
of any other Contributor, and only if You agree to indemnify,
defend, and hold each Contributor harmless for any liability
incurred by, or claims asserted against, such Contributor by reason
of your accepting any such warranty or additional liability.
