Terms of use

Last updated: 3 October 2026

These terms cover Tinta: the web app at tintareader.com, the Mac app, and Tinta Pro. Tinta is made by James Moult, an individual based in Australia ("we", "us"). By using Tinta you agree to these terms.

Using Tinta

Reading with Tinta is free and needs no account. You may use it for your own learning and in teaching, with as many texts as you like.

Please don't:

Accounts

Some features need a free Tinta account: AI features, and Pro. You must be 16 or older to have an account. You sign in with your email address and a code we send to it; keep access to that email, because it is how you get back in. You are responsible for what is done with your account.

You can delete your account at any time in Settings › Account. That deletes what our server holds about you. Texts and words kept on your devices are not affected.

Your texts

What you paste or open in Tinta stays yours. It is kept on your device, and is only sent anywhere when you use an AI feature, as the privacy policy describes: https://tintareader.com/privacy.html

Only use texts you are allowed to use. Reading a text in Tinta is like reading it anywhere else; Tinta does not publish it.

AI features

AI translations and stories are written by a language model and can be wrong. Use them as a help, not as an authority. When you use your own API key, the provider's own terms apply to what you send them, and they bill you directly.

Tinta Pro

Pro is a subscription, monthly or yearly, at the price shown on the pricing page when you buy: https://tintareader.com/pricing.html

The dictionaries

Tinta's dictionaries are built partly from open data, used under its own licences, which the credits page lists: https://tintareader.com/licenses.html Those licences, not these terms, govern that data. The app itself is ours, and all rights in it are reserved.

Changes and availability

We keep improving Tinta, so features change. We will try to keep it running, but cannot promise it will always be available or free of errors. If we change these terms in a way that matters, we will update the date above and, for account holders, say so by email or in the app before the change takes effect.

We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms. If we close a Pro account for any reason other than a breach, we will refund the unused part of the period.

Liability

Tinta is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect loss, or for more than you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.

Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or changes a right or remedy you have under the Australian Consumer Law, or under the consumer law of the country where you live, that cannot lawfully be excluded.

Law

These terms are governed by the laws of Tasmania, Australia, and the courts of Tasmania may hear any dispute about them.
